The grazing school features a mixture of classroom education and hands-on applications. UK College of Agriculture, Food and Environment specialists and industry representatives will discuss important components of an effective rotational grazing system for much of the morning. During the afternoon, producers will break out into groups and conduct a hands on exercise where they will determine the forage needs of a calf for 24 hours and the amount of forage present in the pasture. They will then set up a temporary watering system using plastic roll pipe, quick couplers, and a watering troughs and use temporary electric fencing to allocate enough pasture for one calf for a 24 hours. The following day, students will assess how closely they estimated the forage needs of the calves.
Students will also tour a local farm. They will then break into groups and design a grazing system for this farm. Each group will present their results and answer questions about their design. As part of the school, an experienced grazer will visit with students about how they have implemented improved grazing management on their farm and the impact that is has made on productivity and profitability.
While this school is particularly geared toward beef, dairy, sheep and goat producers, equine enthusiastic and producers with more exotic grazing species will also benefit greatly from the management practices learned.
